If you hear a sound...

By Chung-hyeon Kim

This story dates back one year ago. I experienced a very unique situation when I
was in a dorm behind Jeju National University. I thought I should exercise more,
then I decided to jog around a track every weekday. How late was not that
important. Even at 10 PM or 11 PM I was out to do exercise.
Two weeks later, it was 10 PM. I was on the track. I heard a weird sound while I
was jogging, but I didn't care about it and just tried to ignore it. After a few
minutes the sound came closer to me. I looked around to see if there were any
people jogging, but there was nobody except me. I started to be afraid of that
sound. I was trying to find out what that sound was when I was running.
Unfortunately I considered that it could be a ghost's sound. Honestly, I was not
scared of ghosts or supernatural things before then. My heart ran faster than on
any other day. It seemed like my blood was passing through me quickly. I mean,
adrenalin came up quickly, and I just tried to get out of the track. I attempted to
call some of my friends to overcome my feeling of fear. I was absolutely freaked
out.
After that day, I asked my friend who worked near Jeju National University about
the sound of whistle. He replied to me that there is one facility to raise dogs and
usually they sound like that. Then I was relieved by what he was saying, and I
asked him, "even at 10 PM, right?" he said to me "No, it was impossible, we
finished work earlier than other days yesterday. We finished at 6 PM. Also we
don't work later than 8 PM".
My sight was a blur at that moment. After that, I stopped running or exercising
after 10 PM. and still I think about what that sound was. Was it a dog whistle's
sound? Or a real ghost's?

The Full House house (풀 하우스) has been destroyed.

Back in 2007, there was a popular miniseries on Korean TV called "Full House" (풀 하우스) starring Song Hye-Gyo (송 혜교) and Rain (비).  It was one of the first Korean TV shows I ever saw.  Recently, I took a trip to Si Island, a.k.a. Sido (시도), which is northwest of Incheon, to see the famous house from the series.  It took quite a long time to get there from downtown Seoul.  When I arrived at the beach that was indicated by the signs and tourist maps as being the location of the house, I saw nothing.  I proceeded to frantically explore the coastline, thinking I had taken a wrong turn, and started worrying about not being able to find the house before the day's last return ferry to Incheon.  Then it hit me:  the pile of rubble at the cordoned-off "construction site" I had walked by several times WAS the house.  It had been torn down.  No more picket fence.  No more spiral staircase.  No chance to sing the Three Bears song in the same place where Ji-eun, Song Hye-Gyo's character, had once sung it.   There stood nearby a dilapidated old ticket booth with faded pictures of Rain in an open shirt still posted in its windows.  In big bold letters, another sign in its windows shouted "CLOSED." No kidding!

Since I had come so far, I sang the Three Bears song anyway with the rubble as my background.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE4nn5EwzvQ&feature=youtu.be

Saryuni's poisonous fruit

Last August, I went to Saryuni Forest Road with my schoolmates while walking down the road. I saw a fruit that looked very tasty. I though it would be some kind of berry. So I took it and put it in my mouth. But it tasted bitter and stinging, so I spit it out. When I got back home, I searched internet using words like poisonous, plant, strawberry-like. and I found the fruit was called Chonnamsung, and it was a deadly enough to kill a person with a small amount. I also found that it was used as a death penalty in Chosun Dynasty. I could have died if I hadn't spit it out!
So please be aware of this plant before you go to Saryuni Forest Road. And not only eating fruits but also just touching this plant can cause allergic reactions to some people!

Won Bin

by Seulki Ko

I met a famous korean movie star called 'Won Bin'. He looked as handsome as i
had heard. When i saw him i didn't close my mouth. Afterward, he walked to me.
He looked at me and was smiling. Surprisingly, he stroked my head. I was really
happy. It seemed like it was a dream. Oh, dear ... Yes. That is not real it is. Just in
my dream. But i believe that dreams come true!!

Hospice and Carnegie

by Yu-Jin Han

Story1
Do you happen to know hospice? I asked someone who is seated next to me what hospice is. She said it may be an animal hospital. But it is not correct. It is care for patients who is meeting death until they die. By chance, I found 'the hospice volunteer education' operating in Jeju University Hospital by my acquaintance. As a future nurse, I thought it could be helpful to improve my values and positive to experience further. So I applied to that. Actually It was hectic because of my things such as tiresome major educations. I had to run to the Jeju University Hospital as soon as I finished school. But in such busy days, I felt my passion burning into my heart. And then I received a certificate for the 18 hour session. Through this education, I learned how to approach and understand patients, pain management, infection management, and funeral procedures. Above of all, the word for 'death' vaguely worried came to me and I thought life of present time is precious and think that I would live faithfully.

Story 2
'I can do nothing. I am shy.' In this way, I was short of confidence. By chance, I found education of Carnegie who is known as a relationship between humans. Seeing its detailed titles, I thought it was necessary for me. And I thought It was an opportunity to improve my confidence. So I applied to that. There, I made a presentation in front of many students by preparing something to speak/say/talk about. Also I screamed to someone who wasn't getting along, played a variety of unexpected situations. Most of all, I saw passion and efforts through the other students. Moreover, I discovered my unknown aspects. And I thought through my advantages such as patience, efforts and sincerities, I could overcome my drawbacks. Finally, I won't forget their passion.

What's that sound?

                            by Lee Nan Young

In 2011, one afternoon, it was a normal hot and sunny day in K.L, Malaysia. I should had brought my daughter home from school by car. Before just until my departure, I had been working harder and harder nearer to the closing time.
Although I’d felt a bit tired, I had just started up the car engine, and then stepped on the accelerator pedal slowly. But my mind was still being full of my work. Suddenly I heard a noise like a plastic bag rustling. So I stopped going. I looked around me and outside the car while I was sitting in the car seat. I couldn’t find anything so I stepped on the accelerator pedal again. But I frightened by the noise became louder than before. I couldn’t leave because I suspected my car to be wrong. At that moment, my heart rate became a lot faster. So I got down from the car and then I looked around the car carefully. After that I was frightened by on the right side of the car and I couldn’t find the words. My car had already been crashed seriously against a pillar of the parking lot. The rustling plastic bag noise had been from my car with a pillar. The fact is that I had not slept for 2 days because of hard work and I’d stepped on the pedal while putting the car in reverse gear, so finally it was happened. I was being like a drunk driving. I had been so tired that I dozed off behind the wheel. It was a scary experience. After all I had to pay 2,500,000 won(US $2,200) for the repairs on my car, I didn’t finish my work within that day and I had to ask my friend to bring my daughter home.
After this experience, I have tried to reduce working than before and when I do not feel well because of lack of sleep, I don’t drive. Experts said that lack of sleep can reduce immune functioning, is linked to obesity, a greater risk of depression and makes workers less effective during the day.
